The World No.14 from Bogota had a sensational run at the tournament where he defeated three-time World Champion Ramy Ashour, former World No.3 Omar Mosaad, World No.2 Ali Farag and 'giant killer' Raphael Kandra before going onto topple World No.1 and reigning World Champion Mohamed ElShorbagy in an epic 102-minute final to go down in the history books and claim his first World Series title.
The reaction in Rodriguez's home country and South America as a whole has been huge and the man himself still can't believe what he has achieved.
“I am very proud of what I achieved in my sports career,” said the 32-year-old days after his win in Hull.
“The support from the Colombian media has been incredible! I have received messages from all over the world!
“This historic achievement put me on the radio, TV and newspapers in Colombia. I even received a message from the Colombian President congratulating me publicly!
“It’s a lot of mixed feelings… knowing that I became the best athlete in a racket sport in Colombia by claiming the British Open title.
