Sarah-Jane Perry has established herself as England’s best player over the last few seasons, and broke into the top five in the World Rankings for the first time in the summer of 2020.
Birmingham-born Perry made her Tour breakthrough in 2011 as she defeated Tania Bailey in the final of the Manor Open to capture her first Tour title. She collected a further three titles a year later and finished 2012 in the world's top 30, having leapt up over 35 places in the World Rankings since the start of the year. Perry picked up her fifth Tour title at the Delaware Open in February 2013 and followed that up with two more title wins before a trophy drought that would last for two years.
However, Perry returned to form in February 2015 and defeated Dipika Pallikal in the final of the Granite Open to claim her first PSA W25 title just weeks after winning her first British National Championship title. Perry claimed two runner-up finishes at the NetSuite Open and Monte Carlo Classic throughout the rest of 2015 and claimed one of the biggest wins of her career when she defeated Malaysian superstar Nicol David in the quarter-finals of the Al Ahram Open in September 2016 in front of the stunning Great Pyramid of Giza.
Perry went on to make three successive semi-final appearances in the Carol Weymuller Open, J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions and the Cleveland Classic. England’s Perry also finished runner-up at the British Open, where she came up against fellow Brit, Laura Massaro in the first all-English final since 1991.
She also helped England triumph in the women’s final at the European Team Championships as she beat France’s No.3 Camille Serme for just the second time in her career. The start of the 2017/18 season was a good one for Perry, as she took victory at the Oracle NetSuite Open, beating Nicol David in the final in San Francisco.
She started 2018 with three successive quarter final appearances, at the PSA Masters, Tournament of Champions and Cleveland Classic. This was followed by making it to the last four of both the British Nationals and Windy City Open. Perry won the Silver Medal at the Commonwealth Games, losing out to Joelle King in the final. In October, the Englishwoman retained her Oracle NetSuite Open title, beating Raneem El Welily in the final.
After her victory in San Francisco, Perry became England No.1. She went on to finish runner-up at the Carol Weymuller Open, losing out to Nour El Tayeb in the final. A few weeks later, Perry made the semi finals of the Hong Kong Open. The Englishwoman then took some time out of the game to recover from surgery on her right arm, returning three months later at the World Championships in Chicago. She then reached the quarter finals at four straight events, before making it a step further at the British Open in Hull.
Perry carried on that consistent run of form, making it to at leas the quarter-finals of every event she played in over the course of the 2019-2020 season. That run included semi-final appearances at the Open de France - Nantes, Windy City Open and Black ball Open, while the Englishwoman also made it to the final of two Bronze level tournaments, the Cleveland Classic and the Bahl and Gaynor Cincinnati Cup.
